What skills does a web developer need to build a site?

I am looking for a web developer to create a website and am writing an job ad. What skills would they need to have? HTML? it is going to be a fairly basic site but they will need to do 3-D modelling so prob flash or autocad? Any tips or suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks

HTML is necessary but you could use any office suite to edit html pages. For the 3D models JavaScript shall be needed or you could download Alice and create the model in it then export it to a webpage in Alice. Later you could use open office or ms-word to edit the application. and you’ll need a webhost or your own server

Since your requirement is specific towards 3D modelling, they should know Autocad or Google Sketch up kind of tools as well as HTML, Photoshop or any design tools if it has to be a web based. any programming editor like dreamweaver or editplus would make it more faster to work on.

Most 10-50 year olds, who have or are experienced with the Internet could maybe create a simple site, in HTML, but not in flash or 3d.

but would they have the expertise to upload, project manage, plus do your flash/3d modeling – like pov etc autocad etc… probably not

most people who have learned HTML, or flash or can do flash would prefer to do one or the other not both.

I think maybe you would need two people – a team, or someone willing to learn everything…possibly someone with previous experience, like possibly ..

These days, any web developer really should be well versed in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. So, those three, and 3D modelling experience should be the prerequisite.

Image editing skills would be essential if the developer needs to create images. In particular, Adobe Photoshop is industry standard.

If you need a database driven website, then SQL would be essential too, as well as experience with one or more relational database management systems (RDMS). These could include MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle. MS Access probably wouldn’t cut it, as it’s not really suitable for web applications. The developer will also need to be well versed in a server-side scripting language such as PHP or ColdFusion.

A good developer should take a user-centered approach. That is, they will look at the user requirements first, then create a website based on that. Some developers are too keen to show off their skills and forget about the end user! Also, experience with usability testing could be useful here.
