What to look for in a AutoCAD programmer?

My company is looking to hire a guy for AutoCAD development and automation. i have used AutoCAD since version 2.1 in the late 80’s, however my programing skills are limited. My company has asked me to help with writing a job description and a add for the position, and i am asking for help here. I know they need to be fluent in VBA and vlisp, but is there other requirement that should be highlighted? other skills that are important? we hope to not only automoate autoCAD internally but also to have it comunicate with a SQL Database.
any and all help apreciated. links certainly welcome.
thanks to everyone in advance.

You might want to focus on other things than autocad. For example, some knowledge of basic engineering is going to be very helpful. Another thing to concider is writing skills. Sooner or later documentation is going to have to be generated. Most importantly, this individual is going to have to be able to work as a member of a team, or at the very least interact with other people. Some people are very good programmers but can’t accept outside input very gracefully. I can speak from experience that there is nothing worse than having to deal with a prima donna programmer.

    good luck

maybe back up a bit here….

there are many add-on packages available, it seems hard to imagine one that doesnt meet your needs.

hiring a programmer can be okay, but with all of the interlinks, cross-references, and internal code, it is VERY difficult to create any sort of automation is a reasonable amount of time, that will work.

I would check very deep into what autocad does now, and all of its various add-on packages.

autocad does indeed make it deliberately difficult, so that it keeps its hands on the platform

this is my opinion having been with the platform since 1.2 and having to prgram structural and civil applications
