When starting a drawing on autocad how can I change the drawing to make 1 inch equal to 1 foot?

I am using autocad 2005 and stuck because i do not know how to change it, whenever I type in 16 it comes up as 1′ 4″ when i want it to be 16′ please help i would really appreciate it

    According to the tutorial, you draw 1:1 in AutoCAD and need not concern yourself with scale (units) until it is time to print. Which, I suppose, does offer advantages so you could quickly swap the units for a plotter or an inkjet.

    You are drawing to correct scale…just Type 16′ instead of only 16…If you don’t make any mark ‘ or ” it assumes them to be inches.
    Other examples say you want to input a foot and a half
    write 1’ 6 ….it will automatically assume 6 to be inches.

    As for scale worry about it when you plot or when you write text and want it a particular size when they plot…
