AutoCAD Tip of the Day: Fast Select – Reach out and touch EVERYTHING

Here’s a quick selection tip. Actually it’s a fast selection tip. If you have AutoCAD Express Tools installed (which as I said before, you should), you have access to the Fast Select command.

Fast Select allows you to select an object, and then it will select all the objects that are touching it. To run it in conjunction with another command, type ‘FS (make sure you use the apostrophe which allows it to work inside another command).

For example if you want to erase all the objects that touch a certain line, do the following. Give the ERASE command. When prompted to select opjects, type ‘FS and then select the initial line. All Objects that touch the line are also selected and erased once you press ENTER again.

There’s another command called FSMODE. FSMODE determines how far the selection will travel. If you only want to select objects that touch the original object you pick, then make sure FSMODE is set to OFF. If you want to start a major chain reaction, and select all objects that touch not only the original object, but even the objects that touch each other, set FSMODE to ON.

By the way, Fast Select (FS) only works on the following objects: LINE, POLYLINE, LWPOLYLINE, CIRCLE, ARC, ATTDEF, TEXT,MTEXT, ELLIPSE, or IMAGE.

If this tip is new to your, please post a comment below.
